Tech security tip How to remove malware from your computer

Anyone who regularly browses the Internet needs antivirus software. Think of it like a life jacket. It is there to keep you safe in case of emergency.

And when malware attacks your defense, its code is red. You fear that you will lose everything, your emotions are overwhelming and you may not be in the right state of mind to find a good solution. So preventive measures make a world of difference.

The best way to set yourself up for success is to have a good antivirus solution on your device. We recommend our sponsor, TotalAV, an industry-leading security suite that provides the best security in the business. You can get full protection for a full year at ProtectWithKim.com… all for just $19! It’s an incredible deal: You’re getting more than 85% off what most people pay.

So you just found out that malware has infected your phone or PC. now what?
You feel that you are safe on the Internet, especially if you avoid shady websites. But, sadly, viruses can spread everywhere – even in unexpected places. So if your PC is exposed to malware, you want your device to be able to fight it.

1. Install a Virus Scanner to See What You’re Up Against
Before you can start thinking about a good defense, you’ll want to confirm your fears with a virus scanner or your antivirus software of choice. We recommend TotalAV. More on that below.

2. Disconnect from the Internet to prevent further damage
Your virus has found you online, so you’ll want to disconnect from the Internet to make sure it doesn’t spread. Unfortunately, disconnecting the computer from the Internet does not completely disable the malware. This prevents bad programs from causing even more damage to your device.

3. Protect yourself by running Disk Cleanup

4. Trigger Safe Mode by Rebooting Your Computer
This special mode keeps Windows in its original state using a limited amount of drivers and files. It helps you keep your PC safe while you fight viruses. Here’s how you can reboot your computer in Safe Mode:

Tap on the Windows logo key of your keyboard. At the same time, hold down the R key. You will see a box called “Run” pop up.

Now, you will open a new window named “System Configuration”. Navigate to the Boot tab.

Once you are there, go to Boot Options. Check the box next to Secure Boot. Then, hit OK. Your screen will look like this:

If the problem is on your phone and not in your PC, don’t worry. We have useful tricks that can help you save on your mobile device. Tap here and scroll down to step six for the safe mode solution.

5. Now it’s time for virus scan
This is the most important step. Run a virus scan using your antivirus software. This will identify the dangerous files that you can now remove or quarantine the virus to permanently boot from your computer.

While you’re at it, don’t forget to scan your computer to make sure you’ve eliminated the threat forever. Find a new threat? Delete or quarantine files again. Foam, rinse, repeat.
